Case Study

Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter

When members of the non-profit group Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter met with Honeywick to discuss their interest in establishing a stronger online presence, two things were abundantly clear: these people cared about the animals they were helping and the existing website needed a complete overhaul to reflect the passion so clearly felt that day in our conference room on 5th Street.

Improving the dated branding for the Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter was the first step our team took towards achieving a fresh and modern presence online. With a new logo that represented the companionable animals the group served and clarified that The Friends were a completely separate entity from the county-run shelter, the Honeywick team was able to create a clean, modern, engaging design that required little editing before being developed into an in-depth and easy-to-maintain WordPress website environment.

Not only did the team at Honeywick work to create a website that was eye-catching and informational; they also enabled The Friends with a website that accomplishes passive work including: accepting online donations through PayPal, soliciting new member sign-ups digitally, and highlighting weekly Shelter Stories to bring attention to highly adoptable cats and dogs. With new branding and a website overhaul, Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter’s online presence was catapulted into the 21st century over an incredible three-month period of collaboration.

About the Client

Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter is a 501(c)(3) organization formed by a group of animal advocates and recruited members, including local opinion leaders, in Grant County, Kentucky. Formed in 1997, Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter has operated since its establishment to ensure adoptable dogs and cats are featured in the county newspaper, listed on PetFinder and presented at every local adoption event possible. In 2010, the group implemented an aggressive Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return (TNR) program for free-roaming cats and, as of 2023, approximately 4,000 cats have been ethically altered. Powered by volunteers and animal lovers alike, Grant County Friends of the Animal Shelter work tirelessly to ensure the Grant County Animal Shelter retains a no-kill status and every adoptable animal has a fair chance at finding their fur-ever home.

Our group, a 501(c)(3) with the mission of helping the homeless pets of our county, especially those in the animal shelter, was founded 20+ years ago. Thus, the founders are older and less social media savvy than younger people. Still, they understood that, to maintain the flow of donations to keep operating, they had to reach the generation that relies on social media for information.

I mention all of this because, when we turned to Honeywick for help, the professionals there had to deal with technology-challenged people. They helped us create a website that we never could have created alone, one that, we feel captures the essence of our organization and efforts. Thanks to the Honeywick professionals, the website looks very professional and polished, even though the photos we accumulated over the years were spontaneous, instead of professional.

Moreover, the content kept expanding as we tried to capture so many of the categories of projects and purposes. The staff was amazingly patient and consistently offered excellent guidance and encouragement.

Finally, in addition to all of their creative help, the Honeywick staff had to use their tremendous technical skills. We had created a website years ago. It was obsolete, but it was technically tangled with our domain names, emails, etc. The staff had to go deep into the code to save what needed to be preserved. It was a Herculean task, but they kept working until everything old and new worked together.

To summarize, I highly recommend these professionals. Even for the less technically capable people like us, they make entry into the world of social media feasible and as painless as possible.
